La Tortue surf guide

La Tortue is a surf spot located on the island of La Tortue. Known for its isolation, this spot can be tricky to access, especially due to the prevailing strong currents. It’s not the most consistent place to surf, but when the conditions are right, it offers some decent waves. The surrounding environment includes a backing lagoon, which is popular for wind and kite sports, but make sure to be prepared for the remote vibe of the area.

The waves here break primarily over an uneven reef, handling swell sizes around 4 ft (1.2 meters). The optimal swell direction is from the north, while it also picks up swells from the northwest and northeast. Surfers can expect right-hand waves, which can build up nicely with the south-east winds. The tides can vary, but this spot is surfable during low, mid, and high tides. Keep in mind that this spot is more suited for expert surfers due to its challenging environment.

Besides the waves, be aware that rips and urchins can be quite common in the area, so it's not ideal for beginners. If you’re planning to surf here, finding a boat to get to the break might be a smart move to avoid the tough paddle from the western tip of Grand Cul-de-Sac bay.
