Lanzarote's east coast is a mixed bag for surfers. Stretching between Arrecife and Arrieta, this area isn’t known for consistent wave action, but there are moments when the strong north-east windswell kicks in. It’s worth noting that while the coast near Arrecife and Costa Teguise has seen a lot of development, the stretch further north is more rugged and rocky with fewer surfable spots.
When it comes to the surf, the optimal swell direction here is north-east, and you can catch some fun ones when the swell hits around 1 foot (0.3 meters). The waves can come in from the north and east, breaking over a mix of uneven reefs and sandy spots. You’ll often find both lefts and rights, catering to different preferences. It’s best to hit the water during low to mid or high tide, with west winds making for ideal conditions. This spot is mainly suited for intermediate surfers, so be prepared for some tricky sections.
Despite the limited number of reliable breaks, the east coast gets very few surfer crowds, as the main visitors are package holiday tourists. If you're looking to escape the hustle while still catching some waves, this coast can offer a low-key experience, although you might have to wait for the right conditions to really enjoy it.
