Las Gaviotas is a surf spot located in Baja, just south of K-38. It's found in a gated community, which makes access a bit tricky if you’re not staying there. The beach here is often seen filled with surfers and families, especially during the summer and autumn months when the surf conditions are generally more favorable. This spot offers a mellow local vibe, making it a decent place for surfers of all levels to enjoy the waves.
This break is a soft, right-hand reef wave that works well with south swells, but can also handle northwest swells. It’s suitable for all types of boards, from longboards to shortboards, and is ideal for beginners looking to get their feet wet in the ocean. The swell typically ranges from about 3 feet (1 meter) to 8 feet (2.4 meters) and the wave can be surfed at any tide level—low, mid, or high. However, beginners should be mindful of the current and the uneven reef at the bottom. The preferable winds come from the northeast, which helps to create better conditions on the water.
Las Gaviotas can get a bit crowded since it's a popular spot, but it’s not usually overwhelming. If you’re looking for a few mellow waves on your longboard or if you're taking kids out to surf, it's a solid choice. Keep in mind that while there are better waves in the area, the soft breaks here make it a great place to practice and have fun.
