Las Gaviotas - Baja surf guide
Surf: Facing a guarded condo community, the semi-private reef off Las Gaviotas is more of a longboard wave for all levels. Sometimes sectiony and often crowded, it prefers a due S swell.
Environment: Difficult to access unless you are staying at the condos.
Surf: General: A soft, right-hand reef break located just south of K-38, Las Gaviotas is popular with longboarders, beginners, and those taking their first forays into Baja. There are better waves in the region, but if you are looking to longboard a few by yourself or take the kids down to Baja for their first surf trip, you could do a lot worse than Las Gaviotas.
Tides: Works on all tides.
Size: Waist-high to overhead.
Wind: NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE
Swell: S, SW, W, WNW
Bottom: Flat, rocky reef.
Paddling: Beginners might struggle with the current, but if you surf regularly, it shouldn't bother you.
Spot Rating: Soft, right-hand reef break best for boards with a lot of volume.
Access: Difficult to access if you don't rent or own a condo in the gated community.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Gets busy, but not overwhelmingly so.
Local Vibe: Mellow.
Environment: Keep an eye out for sewage spills.
Hazards: Rocks, urchins, rip currents for beginners.
Season: Best during south swells in summer and autumn.
