Les Estagnots is a popular surf spot located on the D79 in Seignosse. Known for its quality waves, this stretch of beach attracts surfers of all levels, especially during the autumn and winter months when the swells are at their biggest. The spot is often packed, so be prepared to share the waves with a crowd. Overnight camping in the nearby car parks is now off-limits, but the area has plenty of facilities for day visitors.
When conditions are right, Les Estagnots can deliver some great surf. The beach works on all tides and can handle swell sizes from around 1.2 meters (4 ft) up to 3.6 meters (12 ft). With a preferred swell direction from the northwest and west, the waves can produce both lefts and rights. Expect fast, hollow waves at high tide and long rides at lower tides, although the shorebreak can get pretty punishing, especially when the swells are bigger. Be mindful of the rip that can turn into a fast current as the swell picks up. This spot is best suited for surfers using shortboards, fish, bodyboards, and those into bodysurfing.
Crowd levels can be high, and the local scene can be competitive, so itβs good to be respectful out there. Rips and longshore drift are also important to keep in mind, especially when the surf is up. While the environment is generally good, it can suffer after heavy rains, which may affect the quality of the surf. Overall, if you want a quality beach break that can handle decent swell, Les Estagnots is worth checking out.
