Long Reef surf guide

Long Reef is a popular surf spot located on the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia. It features a mix of reef and sand breaks that can cater to both beginners and experienced surfers. The area is known for its scenic views and long stretches of beach, making it a great destination for a day out in the ocean. The walk from the Longy or Dee Why car park can be long, but it often doesn't do much to cut down the crowd. So, be prepared to share the waves with others.

The north end of Long Reef offers a variety of waves that can handle swells from about 0.3 meters to over 2 meters. The optimal swell direction is from the southeast, but it can also work with northeast and south swells. You'll find waves breaking over uneven reef and sand, giving you the chance to ride beach breaks as well as some decent left and right-handers. When conditions are right, low and mid tides can offer good shape, and high tide can have some fun shories. Although the waves can sometimes meander, there are moments when you'll score some nice barrels at low tide, especially at the bombora reefs. The spot can be a challenge to line up, and itโ€™s often frequented by longboarders and stand-up paddlers.

For those looking to catch some waves here, the preferable wind direction is northwest, which helps clean up the chop. You can enjoy a range of surf conditions for different abilities, making it a decent spot for beginners to get comfortable while offering enough action for more experienced surfers. Keep in mind, the overall swell size, tide, and wind direction can really impact the quality of your session. If you're around on a day with the right conditions, it can be a really enjoyable place to surf.
