Los Tubos is a surf spot located about 30 minutes west of San Juan. The beach faces slightly west, which means it gets some nice offshore winds from the northeast trades. This spot has a thick, deepwater peak that reminds some surfers of a mini Inside Sunset Beach. When you catch a wave here, you often drop in blind, hoping to hold your line while the lip barrels over your head. It breaks both left and right but tends to favor lefts, with a mix of sand and reef beneath. Plus, there’s a handy paddling channel right beside the peak, making it easier to get back out.
The waves here can handle sizes from around 1.2 meters to 3.6 meters (4 feet to 12 feet), typically breaking over rock. Although the surf can get pretty good, especially with the right swell and conditions, it can also be inconsistent. When the swell is coming from the northwest, north, or a bit more towards the northeast, you can score some fun rides. Head-high to double overhead waves are common, making it suitable for intermediate to expert surfers. Paddling can vary quite a bit depending on the surf size, so be prepared for that. The best wind comes from the south-southwest to north-northwest, while lower tides generally provide the best conditions.
Access is straightforward since you can park right at the beach. However, be ready for potential crowds, especially when the conditions are favorable. The local vibe can also be a bit localized at times. While you’re out there, watch out for the blind drops and heaving barrels, as they can catch you off guard. Late summer and fall are great for tropical cyclone swells, but the winter months tend to bring more consistent surf.
