Lyme Regis surf guide

Lyme Regis is a beach located on the eastern side of the harbour breakwater. It offers surfers some decent conditions, especially when the weather cooperates. The beachbreak can provide long, rolling waves during low tide when the swells are coming from the southwest, making it a popular spot for those looking for a more relaxed surf day. However, the spot isn't always firing, and when the tide comes in high, the waves can become dumpy and break heavily onto the shingle.

The surf here can range from thigh high (about 1 meter) to overhead (about 2 meters), which means it can handle swells from 3 feet (about 1 meter) up to 7 feet (about 2.1 meters). Most of the waves will break over sand, offering a mix of right and left-handers. The best conditions usually occur with north to north-northeast winds, while the best tides to catch are low to mid. If you’re a beginner or an intermediate surfer, Lyme Regis can be a great spot to practice your skills, particularly with shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, or even SUPs. The wave type is mostly beach breaks, and occasionally you might find a little walling section to challenge you.

Access to the spot is pretty straightforward; you can park at the Monmouth Beach car park and take a short walk west to the bay. The crowd factor is generally pretty low, which makes it a nice spot to have some space in the water. Just keep an eye out for rips, especially when the swell is big. The best time to visit is during the winter months, particularly from December to February, when those bigger swells start showing up. Remember, the atmosphere here is quite chilled, making it a pleasant place to surf.
