Machrihanish surf guide
Surf: Good rivermouth peaks although smaller than Westport. Protected from SW gales at south end. Right pointbreak below pub as well.
Environment: Parking, camping and facilities in Machrihanish.
Surf: General: Probably the best known and most popular break on this part of the west coast - due to its proximity to Glasgow. This big expanse of beach, accessed from the southern end, is however fickle with a super narrow swell window. Mostly sand with rocky outcrops, the rivermouth banks can be good. It's a beautiful but isolated spot with strong rips and currents that have seen surfers get into trouble.
Tides: All tides, mid tide is generally best.
Size: Thigh high to overhead.
Wind: ESE
Swell: W or big NW
Bottom: Mostly sand with some rock outcrops.
Paddling: Easy when small, rippy when bigger.
Spot Rating: Fickle, can be frustrating. Often a bit weak, but good in decent dead west groundswell.
Access: Parking available in Machrihanish.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Loads of room to spread out even when busy.
Local Vibe: Friendly.
Environment: Good.
Hazards: Rip, currents, isolated spot - a surfer was swept out into sea here for 32 hours before rescue.
Season: September - November.
