Mahabalipuram Shore Temple is a well-known surf spot located along the southeastern coast of India. Itβs not just famous for its ancient temples and beautiful scenery but also offers some riding opportunities for surfers. The waves here can be hit or miss, so it's advisable to check the conditions before heading out. The area around the temple provides a unique backdrop for anyone hitting the surf, merging culture and sport quite nicely.
The area tends to pick up swells from the southeast and can also take waves from the east and south. The surf generally works best at low to mid tide and can handle swell sizes at around 1 ft (0.3 m) to bigger days. Most of the waves break over sand, with some points creating hollow right-handers as the swell bends in. Keep in mind, while the surf can get fun, it often loses size in the process, so the best time to catch decent waves is from June to September.
On any good day when it breaks, expect a few other surfers out there. The waves cater mainly to intermediate surfers, so if you're looking to improve your skills, this could be a decent spot for you. When the conditions are right, and with the preferable wind coming from the west, you'll find yourself enjoying some solid rides.
