Mahia Spit is a long, skinny finger of rock, beckoning NE swells to implode down the eastern side with a show of force and hollowness unequalled in this region. Square, super-shallow and fast, only experienced barrel-riders will emerge from the outside Spit’s maw. The right off the tip and the inside section is much easier, but it gets crowded at weekends.

From Napier, head north on Pandora Road State Highway 2, onto Meeanee Quay and Main North Road out of the city. Continue on State Highway 2 through Wairoa, then at Nuhaka go straight through the roundabout onto Nuhaka Opoutama Road. Continue along Nuhaka Opoutama Road, turn right onto Ormond Drive. WHen you get to Mahia beach, continue straight ahead onto Mahia East Coast Road. The road will cut across to the east coast of mahia peninsula and down the coast through Mahia. Continue just south of Mahia, you can't miss seeing the rocky spit.

There's a set of scattered cliff-lined sand and reef peaks called Old Mans, just north of Mahia town.
