Main Beach surf guide

Main Beach is a popular surf spot located in Cottesloe. It’s known for being a bit crowded, especially when the waves are good. While there are several other spots nearby like Cove, Seconds, and Isolator, Main Beach can definitely draw in a crowd. The vibe is relaxed, but don’t be surprised if you find yourself sharing the waves with a lot of other surfers. It's not the most consistent spot around, but it can produce some decent sessions here and there.

The surf at Main Beach generally handles swell sizes starting from 1ft (about 0.3 meters) and does best with a SouthWest swell direction. You can catch waves breaking over uneven reef and sand, with both left and right waves available. The best time to surf here is during low to mid tide, and you’ll want an east wind to make conditions more favorable. It's a decent spot for beginners to practice their skills, but be aware of those fast sections and the occasional sucky bits.

It's important to keep an eye out for scattered chunks of reef and rock while you’re in the water. So even though the surf can be fun, be mindful of where you’re paddling. Overall, Main Beach has its ups and downs, but it offers a surfing experience that’s worth checking out if you’re in the area.
