More about Main Break surfspot

From Swakopmund it’s a long, 130km (80mi) drive along salt roads to the Fur Seal Reserve at Cape Cross where the next decent spots can be found. Portuguese explorer Diego Cão, the first European to reach Namibia, erected a 6ft (2m) high cross here to commemorate his land fall. This is a remote area to surf. The dauntingly named Skeleton Coast starts at the Ugab rivermouth, just 75km, (45mi), to the N. There are two long left point breaks here, which are offshore in the dominant S wind. Main Break, the furthest out along the point, is the most consistent wave, with long, fun lines. The take-off area is at the end of the wall dividing the main car park from 100,000 seals, which lend a unique aroma to the surf! Further down the point is a fast, rocky, hollow section called Graveyards. The final section is Factory Point, in front of a slaughterhouse. It’s not as good as the other two waves and smells worse than the seals!

Surfing used to be banned up here and the rule was enforced by an old German man who used to shoot at surfers with a shotgun! Play by the rules and pay the fee of $1.50 per person and $1.50 per car. The park officials don’t like surfers much and if there are any problems they could ban it again at any time. The nearest campsite (which is very basic) is about 40km (25mi) to the S, at the mile 72 marker post. There’s a small restaurant at the seal factory.
