Overview
Majanicho is a reef setup in a small natural harbour protected by two reef-lined headlands. The main wave is a long right along the eastern edge of the channel, peaking far out and rolling in as a mellow, fat wall. On bigger swells it can connect through to the inside.
There is also a nearby low-tide left reef that can get hollow on big swells. The setting is still good, though nearby apartment development may change the pristine feel.
When It Works
Majanicho takes swell from west through north to east, with northeast as the optimal swell direction. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is mainly a winter spot, especially December to February.
The main right is usually better for intermediates and cruisier boards, with long rides and predictable shoulders. It is best on a medium, clean groundswell.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is southwest. The spot is exposed to wind, and if it is blowing east it can get packed with wind rigs.
All tides can work, with a rising tide better. Low tide makes the reef shallower, and bigger days can bring stronger rips.
Local Tips
Fish, funboards, longboards, and SUPs all fit the mellow right. When it is small and fun it can get very busy with SUPs, longboarders, and beginners; bigger surf tends to thin things out. The long paddle out also puts a few people off.
Watch for jagged reef, urchins, currents, and rips when the swell is bigger.
Access
There is free roadside parking out on the end of the headland. Paddle out through the deep channel, but expect a long paddle because the wave breaks way outside. A new asphalt road links the area to Lajares.
