More about Makarori Point surfspot

It’s a long paddle out to Makarori Point’s lengthy, meandering righthander, that is loved by longboarders and cruisers for its cutback walls and pedestrian pace in any SE-S swells. When the swell turns NE-E, shoulders become faster walls with hollower sections and more grunt. The beachbreaks spreading north are quality peaks with stable banks at Centres and Creeks, keeping the crowds happy and spread out.

From Gisborne town centre drive east on Gladstone Road, onto Wainui Road, State Highway 35, towards Wainui. Continue past Wainui on Moana Road and onto Whangara Road. Makorori point is on the first point past Wainui, in the middle of Makorori Beach.

The point can get a bit busy and the older longboard crew are known for their drop ins. Patches or rock stud the beach and can catch you out at low. Multiple carparks along the length of the beach allow yo to choose your peak.
