Makuti surf guide

Makuti is located a 20-minute boat ride from Gizo and offers a shallow left that zips across the reef on Makuti Island. It works best with South or SouthWest swells, as it’s blocked by Green Reef, which keeps the consistency pretty low. If you’re planning a trip, remember that you might not catch waves all the time.

This surf spot handles swell sizes around 3ft (about 0.9 meters) well, but you’ll want to aim for those S or SW swells for the best sessions. The waves break over live coral, and you can expect them to peel left. For the ideal conditions, a SouthEast wind is preferable, and hitting it at high tide is the way to go. Keep in mind, this spot is more suited for experienced surfers due to its challenging nature.

Since it only really functions with specific swell directions, it’s a good idea to check the forecast before heading out. The occasional flat spells can be a letdown, so having a backup plan is smart. Overall, if you’re up for a bit of adventure and can catch it on the right day, Makuti might just be worth it.
