Malaupaina is a beefy right-hand reef break off the north tip of one of the Three Sisters Islands, and you'll need a boat to reach it. The wave breaks over live coral and is strictly one for experts who know how to read a shallow, unforgiving reef.
When It Works
The reef comes to life in light winds and large swells. It draws swell from north to east (N-E), with northeast (NE) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it takes some size and clean conditions to show its heavier side. Expect it to be moderately consistent, so it won't turn on every day but delivers when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind to groom the face. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. The shallow reef alone is intimidating, and the presence of large saltwater crocodiles in the area raises the stakes well beyond the usual. The lineup stays quiet, so you're unlikely to be sharing it with a crowd.
Access
Getting here means a boat out to the island's north tip. The small village has no fresh water, which makes it hard to base yourself out here for long.
