Manilla surf guide

Manilla is a surf spot located on the southern shore of Coiba Island. It's known as a fun park for surfers, with a lively atmosphere and a beautiful beach setting. The waves here are pretty consistent, drawing both locals and travelers looking to catch some rides. While it offers some great surf opportunities, it’s also worth noting that the area has its quirks, including the wildlife that you might encounter.

The surf at Manilla is best when the swell comes from the south or west. It can handle wave sizes starting from around 2 feet (0.6 meters) up to about 4.5 feet (1.5 meters). The main wave type is a rivermouth break, with the lefts really standing out as they roll down the groomed sandbar. The take-off can be a bit steep, but once you’re in, the waves tend to wall up and offer some predictable sections that you can really go to town on. Mid-tide is ideal for the best surfing experience, with the waves less favorable during extreme tidal changes. This spot suits intermediate surfers best, so it’s a great place to work on your skills.

One thing to keep in mind while enjoying the surf is the local wildlife. Manilla is known for its abundant shark presence at the rivermouth, and there are also crocodiles hanging out in the nearby estuary. So, while you're out there catching waves, just keep an eye on your surroundings. Despite the sharks, many surfers still enjoy the vibe and challenge that Manilla offers.
