Maraa surf guide

Maraa is located just south of Taapuna and is known for its unpredictable nature. This left-hander can be less crowded compared to other spots, providing a chance to enjoy some quality waves. The wave itself is quite powerful and can get hollow, making it a place for more advanced surfers. The break runs a good distance before wrapping into the pass, demanding skill and agility from those willing to take it on.

The wave at Maraa can handle swell sizes from about 3ft (1 meter) up to 10ft (3 meters). It breaks over a coral reef, producing predominantly left-handed waves. The best conditions typically occur during higher tide, especially mid to high tide. A south, south-southwest or even west swell works well here, and if the wind is coming from the east, it can be glassy. It’s definitely a spot for experts, so if you’re not comfortable with dangerous tube rides, this might not be the place for you.

Access to Maraa is straightforward; just paddle straight off the beach. The crowd factor is on the low side, so you’re likely to find some space to ride without too many surfers around. The local vibe is pretty mellow with no strong presence, making it a chill spot to surf. The best time to hit Maraa is during the autumn and winter months, from April to September.
