Maria's surf guide

Maria's, named after a kind-hearted woman who used to offer surfers a rinse-off after sessions, is one of the most popular surf spots in Rincon. The beach is located under lush green hills, providing a scenic backdrop for your sessions. With multiple takeoff zones over a stretch of flat reef, it's a place where you can find something to ride, but expect to share the waves with a good number of other surfers. Crowds can get intense during the season, especially with a mix of locals, tourists, and different types of watercraft, including bodyboards and longboards.

The waves at Maria's are mainly right-handers that work best with northwest and northeast swells. You can expect surf sizes ranging from about 4ft to 10ft (1.2m to 3m), but the most favorable conditions usually come with lower to mid tides. The point section next to the exposed rock starts off with a nice bowl and tends to offer down-the-line walls that are suited for high-performance surfing. As it picks up size, you'll find some hollower waves, especially during strong northwest swells where you can potentially score barrels. Overall, the wave requires some down-the-line speed, particularly in smaller conditions.

Access to Maria's is easy; you can park in the lot right by Calypso Cafe. Be prepared for a lot of paddling, especially as the surf gets bigger. This spot can handle all levels of surfers but is mostly suitable for intermediate riders. If you're riding boards like shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, or even SUP and bodyboards, you’ll find something that fits in the lineup. Keep in mind that the best seasons for consistent waves are from late fall through early spring, with prime tropical cyclone conditions surfacing in late summer and fall.
