Masonboro Inlet surf guide

Masonboro Inlet is located on an isolated and uninhabited island between Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach. It can get pretty crowded, especially with local surfers who often access the spot by boat. This is because getting across the fast-flowing inlet by paddling can be a real workout. The setting here is quite nice, but the waves can be hit or miss, so it's not always a guaranteed good time.

When conditions line up right, Masonboro Inlet can serve up some decent waves—especially on a Northeast swell. The swells come in best from the Northeast, but you can also catch rides from the North and South. It handles swell sizes starting at 2 feet (around 0.6 meters), and you’ll find longer, walled-up lefts and short, hollow rights breaking over sand. The waves tend to work well with a NorthWest wind and are best around low to mid tide.

Keep in mind that while it can deliver solid sessions, it's also known for being a bit crowded when it's good. So, if you're planning to surf here, be ready to share the waves with other surfers. Getting there is easier in the winter when access is free, but you might want to consider the tides and wind when you go out to make the most of your experience.
