Matapalo is located just south of Drake's Bay on the Osa Peninsula, close to the Golfo Dulce. This surf spot offers a few options like Playa Matapalo, Backwash, and Pan Dulce, which are all known for their righthanders. While it can deliver some great waves, it doesn’t have the same consistency as nearby Pavones. The waves can vary in quality and size based on the swell, so it's hit or miss. The area is somewhat remote, requiring a bit of a drive that tends to keep the crowds down, although it does get busier during holidays.
The surf here can get pretty juicy, handling swell sizes from about 0.6 meters (2 ft) up to 4.5 meters (15 ft). Ideally, you're looking at SSW to SW swells for the best conditions. Rides typically break over a mix of sand and rocks, with a good right-hander on offer. The wind is best coming from the north to northeast, and for most spots, you want to aim for low to mid tide. The inner points are generally easier, making it suitable for intermediate surfers, while the outer breaks are better left to the experts due to the tricky paddling and the presence of underwater boulders.
Accessing Matapalo requires a 4x4 as the road can get rough, and there aren’t many accommodations around. Most surfers park along the road and trek down to the breaks. It’s also possible to hire a boat from Pavones if you want to skip some of the hassle. Due to its remote location, you'll often find only a few other riders in the water, making it a chill place to surf. Just keep in mind that local vibes expect respect, especially from the visiting surfers.
