Mole is located between steep hills, making it a unique surf spot that offers some protection from the wind, especially from the south. It tends to attract a crowd since it’s the closest spot to the city, but it can be a decent option when other beaches are blown out. On good days, it can be a fun and accessible place for surfers of all levels.
The surf here can be pretty consistent, handling swell sizes from about 2 to 6 feet (0.6 to 1.8 meters). Optimal swell direction is Southeast, but it can pick up swells coming from the East and South as well. The waves generally break over sand and offer both left and right breaks. The north end of the beach produces better quality peaks for smaller surf, while the mid and southern parts have average beach break. The wave conditions work best with a low to mid tide, particularly when the wind is calm or coming from the Northwest. Beginners can definitely find waves to ride, especially when it’s on the smaller side.
While it can get crowded, the vibe at Mole is usually easygoing. Just keep an eye out for rip currents, which can be a hazard. The best time to surf here is during autumn and winter, but you can catch some waves all year round. The paddle out is manageable for smaller days but can become a bit tougher as the swell picks up. Make sure to bring your shortboard for the best experience!
