Mompiche is a popular surf spot located on the northern coast of Ecuador. It’s known for its beautiful scenery and unique beach vibe. The wave is a left point break, and while it may not be the best wave in Ecuador, it still attracts a decent crowd of surfers looking for some fun rides. The area is best enjoyed during the dry season when the winds are more favorable, though the long walk to the break can be a bit of a workout.

The waves at Mompiche are primarily shaped by northwest swells, but it can also handle some strong southwest swells, especially when they’re in the 4 ft. (1.2 m) range. The surf works well at low, mid, and high tides, making it versatile for different surfers. It starts off with a barreling section and then rolls over an uneven reef that can make the ride interesting. While the lefts are the main attraction, the wave can also get a bit fat and shoulder off at smaller sizes, giving longboarders a chance to enjoy some mellow rides, especially inside the bay where the waves are usually smaller and more forgiving for beginners.

This spot welcomes intermediates and up, so if you're still working on your skills, you might want to stick to the smaller waves in the bay. On a good day, Mompiche can get pretty crowded, especially with locals from Bahía de Caráquez and Atacames joining in for the fun. They tend to be friendly, but it’s always good to show respect in the lineup. The nearby Muisne rivermouth can create some nice sandbars, offering more options for those looking to explore the area further.
