Mondos is a solid spot for surfers looking to escape the usual crowds found in busier areas nearby. This place offers a more laid-back vibe, making it a great alternative for those who want to catch some waves without the hassle. The waves here are typically a bit smaller, ranging from about waist to head-high (roughly 0.6 to 1.5 meters), but the spot picks up swells from most directions. It's rideable during a variety of swell events, especially when the conditions align.
The waves at Mondos generally break over a mix of sand and rocks, providing a point break setup mainly favoring rights with some soft, slow-peeling peaks. Most sessions you’ll see longboards and funboards out in the water, as it's beginner-friendly. On a medium to low tide, you can see some nice peaking waves that can run along the break. The ideal swell direction is from the West, WestSouthWest, and WestNorthWest, and the preferred wind comes from the NorthNorthEast or Northeast. It’s important to note that tides tend to be best when low to mid, so plan your surf sessions accordingly.
Access to the spot is straightforward; you can park right in front and just need to tread carefully as you make your way down the rocks to the water. The crowd factor can vary, but on good days with great weather, expect anywhere from empty to medium to heavy crowds, especially since Mondos attracts a lot of beginners. Overall, it's best to surf here from October to February, but you can catch waves year-round if conditions are right.
