Montañita surf guide

Montañita is Ecuador’s most popular surf spot, easily recognizable by its unique phallic-shaped rock. This vibrant town attracts surfers from all around, thanks to the consistent waves and lively atmosphere. It's a mix of beach culture and party vibes, making it a fun place to hang out when you’re not in the water.

The surf at Montañita can be great, especially when the swell is coming from the Northwest, which is the optimal direction. The waves break over both uneven reef and sand, often providing powerful rights that can get hollow on lower tides. For intermediate surfers, the waves here can handle sizes up to about 2 feet (0.6 meters) but can also ramp up when bigger sets come in, with some suitable for double overhead conditions. It's not a bad idea to hit the water at low, mid, or even high tide, depending on the vibe you’re after, but keep an eye on the wind, ideally from the Northeast.

If you’re a beginner or looking to improve your skills, the adjacent beachbreak is a good alternative. It’s where many surf schools operate, but it can get punchy at times, so make sure you’re ready for it. Patience is key at the main point, where there can be a local pecking order; so don’t hesitate to pick off the inbetweeners, which can be just as fun without dealing with crowded sets.
