Mudjimba Island surf guide

Mudjimba Island, also known as Woman Island, is a surf spot located just off the coast en-route to Maroochydore. This spot features a rocky base that offers some decent waves, making it a popular destination for more experienced surfers. The island is surrounded by water that's known to be a bit more challenging than the nearby town beach breaks, so it attracts those looking for a bit of extra excitement on their surf day.

The surf here is typically best with southeast swell direction, but it can also handle northeast and southeast swells. It works well when the swell is around 2ft (0.6 meters) and breaks over an uneven reef. You can expect chunky lefts and ledgy rights that wrap around the ends of the island. The left at the south end is longer, offering some multi-barrel opportunities, especially when the wind is coming from the northwest to north. It's important to know that this spot is best suited for expert surfers, particularly at mid to high tide, as conditions can get tough. Be careful of those air drops and dry suck waves β€” they're common here and popular amongst bodyboarders.

Keep in mind that wipeouts can be a serious ordeal due to barnacles and holes in the reef. If you're not careful, you could end up with some cuts and a few nerves on the way back. To avoid a demanding paddle back, some surfers choose to hire a boat to reach the island and enjoy their session more comfortably. The local vibe can also feel strong, so it’s good to be aware of that as you hit the water.
