Nagahama is a long, flat beach located on the west coast of Tanegashima. The beach features various peaks, primarily near the rivermouths. The surf here can be pretty hit or miss, often offering low-quality waves. At the northern end, there’s a boulder and sand bottom rivermouth peak that tends to be quite fickle.
When conditions are right, Nagahama can produce some decent lefts, especially during a solid west swell (W swell). The waves can offer long rides and sometimes even tubes, but that’s mainly when the swell is pumping, and the wind is coming from the east. It can handle swell sizes starting from around 2 ft (0.6 m), with optimal swell direction being west. You might also catch some action from the southwest and northwest. Most of the waves break over boulders and sand, with both lefts and rights available. It’s best surfed at low, mid, or high tide, and is more suited for intermediate surfers.
Overall, Nagahama really needs the right conditions to shine, and those aren't guaranteed. The preferable wind direction is southeast, so keep an eye on the forecast if you're planning a trip. If it all aligns, you might just have a fun session here.
