Nambucca Heads is a surf spot located on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Australia. It's known for its picturesque scenery, including the surf break at the rivermouth, which draws surfers looking for various wave conditions. The area can be quite busy, especially on the weekends, as both local and visiting surfers come to take advantage of what it offers.
The surf here can be a bit hit or miss. At the Nambucca Heads rivermouth, the breakwall at Wellington Beach tends to trap sand and sometimes forms some decent left and right waves. While the banks can change frequently, there are days when waves are rideable. The optimal swell direction is from the northeast, with the spot able to handle swell sizes starting from about 1 ft (0.3 m). Most days are best for intermediate surfers, so if you're just learning, it might feel a bit challenging. Tides can also affect the surf, with low to mid and high tides all being suitable at different times. The preferred wind direction is northwest, which can help clean up the waves and make for a more enjoyable session.
Aside from the surf, the north side beaches can create some banks around patches of reef, but many surfers tend to head straight to Valla for a bit more consistency. Make sure to check the local conditions and be prepared for company in the water when the waves are firing. It's a spot that requires a bit of patience but can reward you if you get it right.
