Overview
NCO Club is the most popular and most consistent surf spot in the Fort Walton area. It breaks over sand, with beach and jetty setups producing both rights and lefts.
The wave nearest the jetty is shifty and unpredictable. Midway between the jetty and the club thereโs a long, fast mid-break, and out front of NCO thereโs a longer, slower wall that can sometimes get hollow on the inside. The water is part of the Emerald Coast, known for its color.
When It Works
NCO Club picks up swell from southwest to southeast and is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Itโs known for having a decent wave when other nearby spots are flat.
The main seasons are autumn through spring, with hurricane season also in play.
Wind and Tide
The workable wind window is northwest to northeast, with north as the offshore wind. Low, mid, and high tide can all work, but a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This is a decent, easy-access spot suited to a wide range of surfers, from beginners to experts. Shortboards, fish, funboards, and longboards all fit here.
Crowds can be moderate to high, though the surf zone is spread out. The lineup atmosphere is generally mellow but somewhat reserved. Paddling is easy on small days and tougher on larger swells.
Watch for concrete from an old seawall foundation in front of the restaurant. Donโt run into the water.
Access
Park in the NCO parking lot near the beach club. From Highway 98, itโs by the Destin bridge; look for the beach building, surfersโ cars, and the NCO Beach Club sign.
