Newcastle surf guide
Surf: General: A series of small peaks on the strand in front of Newcastle town.
Tides: Usually high tide as more swell gets in.
Size: Knee to chest high.
Wind: W is offshore but tends to blow any swell flat. Best waves with S winds after SE gale.
Swell: S-SE
Bottom: Mostly sand and cobblestone but some larger rocks to deal with, especially at low tide.
Paddling: Jump off the beach if you see a surfable peak. Very close. Inadvisable to paddle out to any islands or "cloudbreaks" in the area because of extreme tidal currents.
Spot Rating: Wave quality is poor to fair at best.
Access: Access from public parking (pay system) in the village.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Nobody really surfs here.
Local Vibe: Very Friendly.
Environment: Large agriculture industry in the area and a tourist town with outflow lines directly to the ocean. Not recommended to enter the water after heavy rains.
Hazards: Rocks and tidal currents. Huge tides in this area.
Season: All seasons. Takes a strong south to southeast wind swell. Receives no long period atlantic swell.
