Newgale surf guide

Newgale is a vast beach located at the northern end of St Brides Bay, facing west, which allows it to catch a decent amount of swell. It’s a popular spot during the summer for holidaymakers, but there’s plenty of space for everyone to find their own spot. With consistent banks throughout the year, surfers can expect decent conditions. The beach is sandy, with some shingle appearing at high tide, making it easy to access, especially with large car parks on the beachfront.

The surf here can range from thigh high (about 0.6 meters) to overhead (around 2 meters), offering something for surfers at different levels. It usually handles swell sizes from 2ft to 6ft, perfect for beginners and intermediates alike. Waves tend to break both left and right over a sandy bottom, which is nice for various board types, including shortboards, funboards, longboards, and even fishes for those who prefer them. The best conditions generally come with east to east-southeast winds, and it’s most effective during low to mid tide. If you’re heading out in bigger swells, be cautious of the rips that can develop.

The crowd factor can get pretty busy during the summer season, but outside of that, it tends to be quiet. The local vibe is friendly, making it a welcoming place for all surfers. Although the best time to surf here is from September to February, you’ll find that there are good waves to ride through autumn and winter, so it’s worth checking out, regardless of the season.
