Newport Point surf guide
Surf: Rare sandbar left renowned for producing world-class Pipeline-style barrels during large S swells and Mexican hurricane pulses. Needs a low tide.
Directions: Located at 18th Street.
Environment: Extremely crowded when it breaks. Located at 18th Street.
Surf: General: Newport Point is a very fickle spot, breaking only on hurricane swells from a specific direction with a specific wave period. It's best on swells that actually have a little E in them, if that makes any sense. When this rare event occurs, it's a hellfire right-and-left barrel that tops any other break in the county.
Tides: low to medium
Size: head-high to double overhead+
Wind: E, NE
Swell: SSE, S, SSW; short-mid periods
Bottom: Sand
Paddling: If it's on, you'll be working and likely taking a few waves you'd rather not on the head.
Spot Rating: Best show in town when it's on.
Access: Street parking with a few meters sprinkled in for good measure. Double check that street sweeping day, if there are available spots galore it's probably too good to be true.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: Think annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
Local Vibe: The buddy system does not exist here: it's every on for themselves.
Environment: Not great after a rain.
Hazards: When it's big.
Season: March-October, sneaky good on S windswell in winter.
