North Bar surf guide

North Bar is a surf spot located on the north side of Montauk Point in Long Island, New York. This place offers surfers a chance to catch waves in a medium-consistency environment. It's a popular spot, especially when conditions are favorable, so expect a bit of crowding during those times. The area is pretty scenic but do keep in mind that parking at Montauk Point State Park comes with a fee, except during winter weekdays. You'll find some nice heated restrooms here to change into your wetsuit comfortably.

The surf at North Bar works best with an East swell or a solid Southeast swell that wraps around the point. It tends to be a good option when other spots are blown out, thanks to the offshore winds from the southwest. The waves mainly break to the right over a mix of boulders and sand, and they can handle swell sizes from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and up. Most surfers here are at an intermediate level and can look forward to fast, down-the-line sections, though the waves donโ€™t really get hollow or link up well. A low, mid, or high tide is suitable for riding there.

Although the variety of conditions can be appealing, be prepared for the currents to get strong, which is typical for Long Island surf breaks. Always keep an eye out for jellyfish in the summer months. Knowing the local behavior of the waves and the currents can definitely make your session more enjoyable.
