The premier surfing arena of Humboldt County, widely known due to its proximity to Humboldt State University and because of its famous Pulp Mill lawsuit initiated by the Surfrider Foundation in the early 1990s. When properly arranged, the sandbar here can provide either freight-train, barreling rights and/or longer, steep, hollow lefts. Holds up to three times overhead and is offshore during SE storm winds. Very powerful and gets crowded. Best during an incoming tide and any clean NW pulse. River-like paddling channel next to the jetty.
A few non-fatal shark attacks here over the years, plus numerous shark sightings.
