Overview
Nuluhaga is the most impressive wave in the area, a heavy reef break with a distinct Teahupoo streak. It wedges up into a thick-lipped peak, but it's the left that gets ridden: steep, heavy drops that lead straight into cavernous tubes running over very shallow reef.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest, with southwest swell the best match. It works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, and only really switches on when the outside swell is moderate to heavy. The wave breaks over an uneven reef and is moderately consistent, so it takes the right pulse to line up. Both lefts and rights show, but the left is the one worth chasing.
Wind and Tide
Nuluhaga wants clean water: glassy conditions, or at most a light southeast offshore breeze. It can break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave for confident chargers, with barely any water over the reef on the drop. Local bodyboarders own the peak, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's firing.
