Oakura surf guide

Oakura is a beach located on the Taranaki coastline of New Zealand, about a 15-minute drive from New Plymouth. It’s a popular spot, especially in the summer, due to its easily accessible waves and facilities. The area is known for being sheltered from strong South winds, which makes it a good option when the conditions aren't ideal elsewhere. The beach can get crowded, particularly during peak season, so it’s worth heading out early if you want some space to catch some waves.

The surf here is generally pretty mellow, making it suitable for beginners as well as more experienced surfers looking for a relaxed session. It works best with a SouthWest swell, but you can also catch waves from the North. The beachbreak operates well at different tide heights, including low, mid, and high. You’ll find the waves breaking over sand and uneven reef, offering both left and right-hand rides. The swell can handle sizes down to around 1ft (0.3m), so it’s a good choice for smaller days, though there’s a bombie out the back that can be fun when the swell picks up.

Oakura can offer some good surf sessions, especially when the conditions align with the preferred Southeast wind. The multiple stream mouths around the beach can shape some decent low tide bars, providing extra options for surfers looking to explore. Overall, it’s a solid spot for a laid-back surf experience where you can enjoy the beach vibe.
