Pacasmayo surf guide

Pacasmayo is an impressive surf spot located in the La Libertad region of Peru, just north of the famous Chicama. Known for its long, endless lefthanders, this place can handle a variety of swell sizes and is often sought after by surfers looking for a unique experience. The area has a relaxed vibe, making it a solid option for both locals and travelers. The best season to hit Pacasmayo is from April to September, when conditions align just right.

This spot really shines with its south to southwest swells, grabbing everything from around 2ft (0.6m) up to a hefty 10ft (3m). The waves break over a mix of sand and rock, and you can expect a fast ride starting from the rocky point, which can transition into a slightly fatter wave as you head into the bay. Low and mid tides are your best bets for optimal surfing, with the wind blowing from the northeast. It’s generally suited for intermediate surfers who can handle the paddle and the ride. On a perfect day, you could get shoulder-high to triple overhead waves with good glassy conditions.

Surfing here can require some effort, especially since the northward current can be pretty strong when it's firing. Many surfers opt to paddle back rather than walk, but watch out for rocks and urchins along the way. Kite-surfing has also picked up, thanks to the afternoon cross-shore winds, which help save your arms from all the paddling. With a consistent wave count and an overall good rating, this spot can get crowded, especially with travelers looking to experience the long rides that Pacasmayo offers.
