Palmas Grandes surf guide

Palmas Grandes is a surf spot located on Santa Cruz island, about a 1.5-hour sail west of Puerto Ayora, the largest town in the Galapagos. This area is known for its solid lefthander that attracts surfers looking for decent waves. The coast here tends to get more consistent swells from the south and southwest than other nearby islands, making it a spot to consider for a surf trip.

The surf here can handle sizes of about 3 feet (0.9 meters) or more, breaking over an uneven reef. You can expect long, squared-off walls that offer some fun rides, especially if you are at an intermediate skill level. The waves predominantly peel left, and the best results come with a north-eastern wind. Whether you’re looking for a quick session or a full day of surfing, you have the option to surf at low, mid, or high tide, giving you some flexibility with timing.

While you’re out in the water, keep an eye out for sea lions; they frequent this area and can be a fun sight while you’re catching waves. Besides the main break at Palmas, you can spot three other left line-ups nearby, plus plenty of potential to explore more waves to the north.
