Patea Rivermouth surf guide

Patea Rivermouth is a surf spot located in Southern Taranaki. It's a popular site among local surfers, primarily because it tends to stay less crowded compared to other spots. The area is backed by two groynes which help shelter the surf from cross-shore winds, making it a more manageable spot for surfers looking to catch some waves. Access to the beach involves a paddle across the river, which can be a bit of a trek but is worth it.

The surf here works best with a swell coming from the Southwest, although it can also handle swells from the Southeast and Northwest. Suitable for beginners, Patea Rivermouth can break at sizes around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and features both left and right waves. The best breaks usually occur near the southern wall, and it can offer decent rides at any tide level, whether low, mid, or high. Just keep an eye on the conditions, as they can change.

Getting to Patea is pretty straightforward. If you're coming from Wanganui, head north on London Street, then onto Great North Road and State Highway 3. Once in Patea, take a left onto Egmont Street and continue to Taranaki Road down to the beach. Remember to watch out for fishing lines while you’re enjoying your session, and you’ll find some easy access for drying off your hair along the rock walls.
