Two groynes protect the Patea Rivermouth, which in turn can give surfers some protection from cross-shore winds. The best peaks are usually found next to the southern wall and it will break through the tides.
From Wanganui head north on London Street, Great North Road, State Highway 3. At Patea turn left onto Egmont Street, then continue onto Taranaki Road, down to the beach. Paddle across the river to get to the south side.
Easy dry hair access off the rock walls. Watch out for fishing lines. Southern Taranakis most popular spot and it is still relatively uncrowded.
