Patrick Air Force Base surf guide

Patrick Air Force Base is located a short drive south of First and Second Light on A1A. The surf breaks here are known by names like Missiles, Hangers, and more. The main break at Hangers gives you a good view of the large airplane hangar across the road, which lends the spot its name. When the waves are big, the combination of sand and some old underwater pilings creates a steeper wave that can pack a punch. However, if you're not feeling it, you can easily walk a few blocks south to the NCO club for a more relaxed session.

The surf at this spot can handle swell sizes ranging from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) to 12 feet (3.7 meters). The best swell directions are North and Southeast, with Southeast generally being the most optimal. The waves can break both left and right over a mixed bottom of sand, old rocks, and pilings. Low to mid tide is usually the sweet spot here, but high tide can work too. For wind, a Southwest direction is preferred. It's an alright spot for beginners, but keep an eye on the conditions, especially if you're not used to some of the hazards.

Parking is available right off A1A, but make sure to stick to the designated areas to avoid any issues with the Air Force. The crowd factor here is generally manageable, so you can enjoy a mellow vibe while you paddle out and catch some waves. The surf season is best during the fall and spring months, especially when hurricanes are rolling in. Just watch out for submerged rocks and the old pilings, and you should be good!
