More about Pensacola Pier surfspot

General: Greek mythology has the Phoenix; Pensacola surfing has the pier. Just kidding. Actually, the wave never died. And the crowd never left, even after a hurricane destroyed the structure and clean-up crews pulled the pilings. But after being called Pier Parking Lot for almost 10 years, the it's good to see the namesake come back to life along with the better sandbars. Tides: Incoming Size: Wait-head high but can hold triple overhead Wind: NW, N, NE Swell: ESE, SE, S Bottom: Sand inside, rock reef outside Paddling: Fairly easy paddling but can get more challenging on bigger swells. Spot Rating: Decent spot overall and the pier affords wind protection. One side can be much better than the other depending on the sand. This spot can handle some size and have seen it easily hold 3x overhead hurricane surf.

Crowd Factor: Minimal during off hours. Crowded after 3 p.m. and on weekends. Local Vibe: On the big left, plenty. Less, closer to the beach.

This is the emerald coast, so named due to the water color.

Death on the big left. Waxed windows if you park in the wrong place.
