Pepino surf guide

Pepino is located west of Leblon, just past the mile-long São Conrado beach. It's a popular spot for locals and surfers looking for something different, but be prepared for a mixed experience. It’s known for its consistent surf and can be quite lively at times.

The best waves can be found at the farthest east end of the beach where the sand meets the big rock headland. When the southeast to southwest swells roll in, you can expect rides ranging from about 0.6 meters (2 ft) to 1.8 meters (6 ft). The break is predominantly over sand, offering both left and right waves. It works best on medium tides and when the wind's coming from the north-northwest to northeast. The wave can get hollow and powerful, but it’s best suited for intermediate to expert surfers, especially when it’s around head high. When Ipanema is flat, Pepino might be worth checking out for some rebounding fun.

Access to the spot is easy, and while the crowd factor can be quite busy, it’s generally an overall cool vibe. The rides here are short since the break is close to the beach but can pack a punch when the conditions are right. Autumn and winter are the prime seasons for surfing, but Pepino can offer waves year-round.
