Pete's Reef surf guide

Pete's Reef is a surf spot that attracts a good number of surfers, especially when the conditions are right. It's a bit of a mission to get there since there's no actual parking, and you'll need to take a long walk in. The vibe here can get crowded, so be prepared for some company both in and out of the water. Plus, the rocky entry and exit can make it a bit tricky, especially with strong rips when the tide is coming in.

When it comes to the surf, Pete's Reef is known for being a swell magnet. It works best on small summer swells, ideally in the 4ft (about 1.2 meters) range. The optimal swell direction is from the southwest, but it can handle swells coming from the south and west too. The waves break over an uneven reef, creating both left and right-handed rides. The best time to catch waves is during low to mid tides, and the preferred wind direction is northeast. This spot is more suited for intermediate surfers, so if you're still working on your skills, keep that in mind.

Accessibility can be rough, so make sure you're ready for a bit of effort to get in and out of the water. Be aware of the strong rips, especially as the tide pushes in, which can make for a challenging experience. Respect the local crowd while you're there, and just be cautious about the rocky areas to avoid any slips or bumps.
