Pico de la Laja is a surf spot located just outside the city, easily visible from the highway as you head south. It's not just a place for surfing; you can also spot plenty of seagulls hanging around. While the waves can be fun, itβs worth noting that the spot can get crowded due to its popularity.
This spot offers both lefts and rights breaking over an uneven lava reef. The waves are known for shaping good barrels, especially on the left, which tends to provide longer tube time after the critical drop. The waves work best with an east swell direction and can handle sizes around 3 ft (about 1 meter). For the best experience, it's recommended to surf during high tide when the conditions are more favorable. Wind from the west is preferred, and this spot is best suited for intermediate surfers as the shallow reef can be dangerous.
If you're looking for some variety, there are also beach breaks at the southern end of the spot. Bodyboarders frequent this area too, so you'll see plenty of them taking advantage of the good waves. Just keep an eye on the surf conditions and enjoy your time at Pico de la Laja!
