Piedras Blancas is located just north of downtown San Simeon. Accessible via Highway 1, this surf spot features a mix of beach and reef breaks that can deliver varied conditions. The area is known for its mix of surfers, from beginners to more experienced riders. The scenery is nice, with the backdrop of coastal cliffs and the infamous elephant seals that hang around nearby.
The surf here can range from a thick right-hand reef break during clean conditions to a peaky, rocky beach break on smaller days. It generally handles swells from 4ft to 8ft (1.2m to 2.4m) well, with preferable swell directions being south, southwest, and west-northwest. The waves break over a combination of sand and rock, with rights being more common, though there are lefts to be found too. Ideal conditions usually require a low to mid tide and winds from the northeast to east, making for a somewhat reliable session when the swell is in the chest-high to overhead range (around 1.2m to 2.4m). Intermediate and expert surfers will find it more enjoyable, especially during summer and winter months.
Access to Piedras Blancas is straightforward. Park at the tiny cul-de-sac on Pico Avenue and take the staircase down to the beach. Crowds can be moderate, with around 10-15 surfers being a typical occupancy, so it's good to be chill and respectful to the locals. Keep in mind that the local vibe is present, partly due to the elephant seals and even some invisible white sharks in the area. It's best to be aware of your surroundings while enjoying the surf.
