Pipes surf guide

Pipes is a well-known surf spot that attracts surfers looking for some serious waves. Located on a bend of reef, it can get pretty intense when the conditions are right. The spot is best for experienced surfers, so if you’re just starting out, you might want to choose another break. Expect a challenging vibe here, and keep in mind that the crowd can be a mixed bag.

The surf at Pipes really picks up with a moderate Southeast swell, delivering some solid conditions. When it’s on, you can experience fast and hollow tube rides that can be thrilling. The take-off is often thick and vertical, which requires skill to navigate. It can get technical, especially if there’s too much west in the swell and the tide is dropping. The waves predominantly break to the left over live coral, and it usually handles swell sizes starting at around 3ft (about 0.9 meters). For the best results, mid to high tides work best here, and it handles east trade winds pretty well, making it a consistent spot for dedicated surfers.

Pipes really attracts bodyboarders, who often enjoy the intense barrels that form here. If you're up for a challenge, this spot can provide some of the more exciting surf experiences, especially when the Southeast swell is pumping. Just be prepared for the technical aspects of riding here, and make sure you're confident in your abilities before taking on the waves.
