Pistons surf guide

Pistons is a surf spot located on the north coast, about 3-4 hours from the capital, making it a bit of a trek for weekend surfers. It's situated in the Bay of Jacmel, breaking off the remains of an old shipwrecked engine that adds to its unique setting. Locals often hit this spot on weekends, and if you're around, you might run into Vadim and Russell, who are known for their contributions to the local surf scene.

The main wave at Pistons works best with southeast swells and can handle sizes starting from 1ft (0.3m) up to around 6ft (2m). This spot is known for its lefts when the east and south swells come through, especially when there's a good fetch. The wave breaks over an uneven reef and sand combination, providing a variety of surfing experiences. Morning offshores from the steep mountains help shape the waves, but it’s usually best suited for intermediate surfers. You can catch a good ride during low, mid, and even high tides, with north winds being preferable.

If you’re planning to surf here, there’s a free parking area right next to the beachside food stalls, making it easy to grab a bite before or after your session. The area around Jacmel is also worth exploring, known for its local arts and vibrant culture, which adds to the overall experience of visiting Pistons.
