Playa Bonita surf guide

Playa Bonita is the main surf beach in the area, located in a lively spot that tends to get crowded. It has a mix of surfing conditions and is known for its mid-tide left reef at the north end. The beach itself offers a variety of breaks, but recent geological changes due to an earthquake back in April 1991 affected the area's coral reefs, raising them by about 2-3 feet (0.6-1m). This spot can draw in surfers looking for a casual surf session, but it’s good to know what you're getting into.

The surf here works best with a north-east swell and can handle sizes starting from around 2 feet (0.6 m). It’s generally a left wave, which can get hollow and powerful, especially during a strong NE swell. The high tide usually brings a beach break that tends to close out at head-high, while the low tide offers short and sucky rights over some rocky areas that are more favored by bodyboarders. This spot is definitely more suited for intermediate surfers, as the left can close out in east swells and the drop-ins can be tricky.

When planning your session, south winds are preferable as they create better conditions. Keep in mind that the area can get quite busy, so be prepared for some crowding in the lineup. Surfing here is a fun experience, but being aware of the local dynamics and respecting the locals can make your day much better.
