Overview
Playa Escondida, or 'Hidden Beach', is a reef break with peaks that throw both lefts and rights over uneven reef and sand. The lefts offer a perfect roll-in into a barrel section with feathering coping. The rights run longer with a steep take-off, though they are less challenging as they bend back in along the reef.
When It Works
The reef is reliable and draws swell from south through southwest, with southwest swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. Mid tide is best, with a rising tide the better call, since low tide exposes the reef and high tide lets the wave go a bit fat.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave. Expect a busy lineup when it works, with boat crews sharing a small sweet spot on the peak that does not handle many surfers at once.
Access
Access is by boat rented at Playa Herradura, and the peaks are private.
